20th Century Chinese Fine Famille Jaune Eggshell Porcelain Dragon Bowl
Product description
20th Century Chinese Fine Famille Jaune Eggshell Porcelain Dragon Bowl
Item being offered is a fine vintage Chinese eggshell porcelain Jaune Famille Bowl. The bowl features scalloped edges and expertly hand painted images of imperial dragons, flowers, bok choy, and lotus flower designs. The bottom of the bowl has a red square makers mark.
Eggshell porcelain, also called bodiless ware, is a Chinese porcelain characterized by an excessively thin body under the glaze. It often had decoration engraved on it before firing that, like a watermark in paper, was visible only when held to the light; such decoration is called anhua, meaning literally “secret language.”
Famille rose is group of Chinese porcelain wares characterized by decoration painted in opaque overglaze rose colours, chiefly shades of pink and carmine. These colours were known to the Chinese as yangcai (“foreign colours”) because they were first introduced from Europe (about 1685). By the time of the reign of Yongzheng (1722–35) in the Qing dynasty (1644–1911/12), these shades were favoured over the translucent famille verte overglaze colours that were previously used and famille rose wares became especially popular during that reign.
