ANTIQUE HAND MADE FORGED IRON CHOPPER
HOT STAMPED WITH MAKER'S NAME ~ CIRCA EARLY 1800'S
This is a hand crafted Antique chopper with a hand forged blade and shaft, with a hand made round wooden handle, circa early 1800's. As expected, the blade is irregular and not concentric; one side of the blade is 3 5/8" long and the other, 3 7/8"; and shows a small forging mark on the back side at the top. The 7 1/2" x 1 1/4" blade is rigid but purposefully thin, made for chopping, and has dark areas of naturally occurring untouched patina, pitting and staining. The shaft is  hand forged onto the  blade in an arrow pattern, and tapers towards the handle slightly, as well as tapering in the side view from the blade to the handle. The shank appears to be narrowed to the shape of a small square nail head, and peened at the end in the wooden handle, that shows dark aged untouched patina. This piece has a rare feature in that it is Maker marked. Some old pieces will have a name or initials of the owner stamped with individual hand applied letters. However this stamping on the shaft is a gang stamp; i.e., a professional hardened steel stamp with all the letters in a row. This J. F. CHAPMAN stamp is also Hot Stamped, i.e., stamped into the red hot Iron when forged; and clearly shows this feature at the end of the stamp in the letter N that is deep when the die was slightly canted when hammered. Although this piece has all the characteristics of an 18th C. piece, the stamping suggests it was made after around 1815 - 1820, when die reducing technology allowed for smaller lettered dies to be made which became in general use. This piece has a lot of visual appeal as a decorator, or can still be used today.
