Description
Offered for your consideration is a fine vintage Old Hickory 10" carbon steel scimitar knife. This example is from their "Shapleigh's Hammer Forged 1843" series.Old Hickory knives were/are made by Ontario Knife Co., which is owned by the same parent company as Queen Cutlery. Old Hickory knives have been made since 1924 and they remain an excellent value for a quality, American-made knife. This model has been discontinued for decades now. I've owned dozens of these knives and this is the third example of this pattern that I've seen from the Shapleigh's line. This type of knife is also often referred to as a cimeter, steaking knife, or steak knife. This style was primarily used by butchers, professional meat cutters, or farmers for reducing sides or quarters of beef into smaller cuts. The design is also well-suited for cutting watermelons, squash, other melons, etc.Prior to WWI and the widespread acceptance of knives made specifically for sportsmen, most folks went afield with a common butcher or skinning knife on their belt. This piece would also make for a great belt knife, especially for the buckskinner/mountain man/fur trapper enthusiast.
The knife has seen moderate use and it remains very nice with no problems. It has not been buffed or polished and remains original.
This is a great example of this solid, well-made knife. The long, sturdy, carbon steel blade is free of any significant corrosion or deep pitting with just some scattered small spots of the usual fine surface peppering as shown. The surfaces display a nice carbon patina and the markings remain fully visible. The blade shows a few old errant grinder marks along the edge, but nothing serious. It has been sharpened a few times and shows just a bit of sharpening loss. The edge is free of any chips, dings, nicks, or damage and remains very nice with just some normal wear. It remains somewhat sharp and the knife is ready for immediate use, although a quick touch-up would have it razor sharp to deliver optimum performance. The spine is free of any dings, dents, marring, or damage. The hardwood handle remains rock-solid and completely tight with the markings fully visible. The handle shows none of the dishwasher fade/bleaching that's so common to wood handles and it's also free of water exposure damage from normal sink washing. The handle was tightly pinned and it's free of any cracks, chips gouges, or damage with just some normal wear. The wood is nicely aged and the handle has a great look all the way around. The surfaces remain silky-smooth and the wood has a warm, rich feel in the hand.
The knife measures 15" in overall length.
A very nice, original example of this classic, American-made knife!
