How We Know What Year the Kansas License Plates Are
Early Kansas license plates were undated. Instead of the year, the state changed the design of the state name. It did this until 1921 when it started putting the year number on the plate.
1913 was the first year for Kansas license plates.  The letters K A N were on the right end of the plate, in a slanted formation, with the K at the top and N at the bottom. The plate was white with black letters.
In 1914, the letters K A N were arranged on a horizontal line but the A was raised above the other letters. I think it looks like a hill. The plate was dark blue with white letters.
For 1915, the letters were on a slant again but this time, the KAN slanted up, with the K on the bottom and the N at the top. The colors were black letters on an orange background.
In 1916, the letters are in an unusual ball-like formation. The KAN is arranged in a circle. It has white letters on a black background.
For 1917, the KAN switched to the left end and were stamped in a straight vertical arrangement.  It was colored light green with black letters.
In 1918, the vertical KAN was placed on the right end and the letters were green with a white background.
Keeping the same design for 1919, the colors simply changed to dark blue letters on light green.
1920 saw the vertical KAN changed back to the left end and the colors were white letters on a black background.
