Description
Vintage Murphy Hunting knife, most likely from the 1930's or 1940's.Murphy was
famous for his WWII "Murphy Combat" knife, but had actually been making knives for many years before that, mainly for himself and Joe Gerber of Gerber Legendary Blades.
After years of making knives for Gerber in the late 30's and early 40's, Murphy sued Gerber for stealing his designs and won that lawsuit in 1951, forcing Gerber to change its handle design and no longer use the Murphy style handle. Unfortunately, the lawsuit crippled Murphy and he went bankrupt in 1954.
Frank Barteaux was a neighbor & friend of Dave Murphy and copied Murphys methods for casting aluminum handles. And now you know why early Gerber, Murphy and Barteaux handles have such similarities. Its a very popular, durable design and you'll see
similar aluminum cast handles from the likes of Ole Moore, Richtig, Clouse, Gerber EK & others.
History lesson aside, this is a very well made knife in very good condition.
Using High Speed Tool steel,
it has a blade that is rarely matched for its durability and sharpness, even by modern custom knives costing hundreds of dollars. The blade is full and the edge is straight with no signs of misalignment or improper sharpening. There is some light scratching and minimal scuffs. The handle is in very good condition with only light markings and normal patina. The blade and handle are attached rock solid, with no play or wobble. A highly sought after and very solid knife in good condition. 4 7/8" blade, 9 1/2" overall length. Blade measures 5/8" in width at the heel. The tip is very sharp and pointed. Its obvious this knife has seen very little use in the last 70 years.
For those who like technical information, try this:
These knives were made using recycled power bandsaw blades and ground to shape, thus "High Speed Tool Steel". This is also known as M-2 steel with a hardness of 62-66 Rockwell C scale. Its metal composition is comprised of the following -
Carbon - 85%
Tungsten - 6.35%
Molybdenum - 5%
Chromium - 4%
Vanadium - 2%
