    This is a traditional Shepherd's Cretan knife. It was made back in
    early 1900's
    . It is in very good vintage condition. Especially the blade is still sharp and pointed. On the blade there are engraved: the map of Crete and some lyrics in Greek (Μαντινάδα)
    .
    The
    Bakelite
    handle has 2 smalls round small showcases with photos of a Cretan woman and a man wearing traditional Cretan costumes.
    Probably the knife is made to commemorate wedding of the Man and Woman from the handle portraits.
    The cretan traditional knife with stainless steel blade is offered as a gift to express a promise of everlasting friendship. It can be offered as a present with a “mantinada” (cretan poem) engraved on the blade which can be used as a decorative or simply as a kitchen knife. It is a spontaneous popular expression in several parts of Greece, but mainly in island of Crete, which is famous for its mantinades.
