This Listing is for AEarly Philippine Moro KRIS Battle Sword w/ Hand Engraved Wavy Blade
.
A
kalis
is a type of double-edged Filipino
sword
, often with a "wavy" section, similar to a
keris
. Unlike the keris, this Kalis's double-edged blade could have been used for both cutting and thrusting.
The wavy portion of the kalis is said to be meant to facilitate easier slashing in battle - since a straight edge tends to get stuck in the opponent's
extremities
, the wavy portion allows the kalis' bearer to more easily pull the weapon out of his opponent's body.
The kalis blade is defined as one that is wide on the base and double-edged. It is capable of delivering both chopping and slicing cuts. While many assume the traditional form of the kalis is the fully wavy blade, the half-waved half-straight, as well as the fully straight blades, are equally if not more common, as straight blades were more practical in combat. Moro kalis blades generally range in size from 18 to 26 inches (46 to 66 cm), though as with all Moro weapons there are exceptions.
Please Note: After doing the research on this sword I had found the history to very interesting (but sad). It appears to be a mainstay weapon in early
Philippine
battles.
This nicely
preserved
kris wavy blade sword was almost certainly brought back to the United States by a U.S. Soldier after the Philippine-American War of 1899 - 1902, in which the Moro tribe rebelled against American rule. The insurrection had been going on since the early 1890s, when the Spanish still claimed the Philippines as their Colony. However, after their defeat by the United States in the Spanish American War, the Philippine islands were ceded to the U.S.. Most of the Moro tribe actually continued the struggle until their final defeat in 1913. The final death toll had reached close to a
staggering
250,000 Philippine natives alone who had lost their lives. From my
research
, this
short sword is made in the traditional Kris (Kalis). The basic design is the same throughout the area, but only in the Philippine Islands did it evolve into a sword. This example dates to the 1880-1895 period, and has a 21 inch wavy double edged blade and it is amazing how extremely sharp the blade still is as found. The overall length is 26 1/2" long. It has a angled point with hand engraving on about 3/4 of the length of the blade. I have tried to show that in the pictures on this listing. The grip was bound in wire and the handle is a very hard polished exotic hardwood with slight scratches minor cracks and small piece on the back of the handle broke. The wire wrap is missing entirely but piece that secures the blade is still there along with a silver ring.
